Omnium classification in the 1939 Tour de France

The Tour de France of 1939 had a special classification, which can be considered a precursor of the combination classification. (source).

It was referred to as the "omnium classification". It was a novelty, and was sponsored by Pernod. Therefore it was also called the "Trophée Pernod". (source).

Points system

There were three separate classifications (explained below): sprinting, time trialing and mountains. The omnium classification was a combination of these three rankings.

Points system sprinting

In every flat stage that was no time trial, the winner received 5 points for this classification, the second rider 4, the third 3, the fourth 2 and the fifth 1.

Points system time trialing

In every time trial, the winner received 10 points, the second 9 points, and so on, until the tenth rider who received 1 point.

Points system mountains

This was just the regular mountains classification.

Points system total

For the omnium classification, the winner of one of the three classifications above received 20 points, the second 19, and so on, until the twentieth rider who recieved one points.
