Team points classification

Below is a very old, very short explanation of the team points classification. For a more complete story that I tried to keep up-to-date, see my book about Tour de France rules and statistics.

Between 1973 and 1988, there was a team points classification in the Tour de France. The riders of the team that was leading this classification, wore green caps (if they were not also leading the normal team classification, in which case they would wear yellow caps.)

Rules

After every stage, for every team the stage positions of the three best riders in that stage was added together, and this sum was added to the team points classification for that team. The team with the fewest points was leading.
