Fastest, slowest, largest margin, most abandonements
This page shows characteristics of Giro d'Italia stages since 1909. See also a similar overview for the Tour and the Vuelta. The characteristics are:
- Stage
- The year and stage number of the relevant stage.
- Type
- The type of stage. I distinguish five types: flat stages (green), hilly stages (yellow), mountain stages (brown), individual time trials (clock) and team time trials (clock with pink background).
- Distance
- The length of the stage, rounded to kilometers.
- Speed
- The average speed of the winner of the stage. If the original winner of the stage was disqualified, I tried to show the speed of the new winner, but I am unsure if I did this for all relevant stages.
- Margin second
- The margin (in time) between the winner and the next rider at the finish.
- Margin last
- The difference in stage time between the winner and the last classifidied rider in hte stage.
- Gap
- The time difference between the rider who would win that Tour de France, and the best of the rest. If this number is negative, the Tour winner was already leading the general classification after this stage, and this number is the difference to the next rider. If this number is positive, someone else was leading the general classification, and this number shows the time difference between them and the later Tour winner.
