Relatively the most jerseys

The tabels below show which rider was most often leader of a classification that gave a leader's jersey, relative to how often they started a stsage.

It only counts the years in which a leader's jersey was used, both for the calculation of how often the rider was leading the classification as for how many stages they started.

The overviews below are about the number of times that a rider was presented the jersey at the end of the stage, this is not necessarily the same as how often the rider wore this jersey during a stage. Since 1970, jerseys can be inherited by other riders, if a rider wears more than one classification, see the overview of all stages in the Tour in which this happened.

Yellow jersey

Bottecchia could lead the general classification almost 60% during his career, also because he died young. Merckx also scores high, because he was dominating. The most surprising name in this list is Lech Piasecki, who only started in seven stages, but was leading for two of them.

Polkadot jersey

As mentioned in the introduction, only polkadot jerseys are included; leaders before 1975 are not counted. Virenque is obviously the most successful, both absolutely and relatively. Thanks to his good start in 2000, Marcel Wüst is ranked high, even though he is not really a climber.

Combination white jersey

There are only eight riders that ever wore the white jersey for the combination classification, as far as I know. And Merckx was leading this classification almost always. This classification was not very interesting because of this.

Young rider white jersey

When the white jersey for the young rider classification was introduced in 1975, Moser received it after 21 out of 25 stages, and he never started again. This is clearly the highest percentage. The rules of the young rider classification have changed a few times, which makes this comparison not fully fair.

Red jersey

The red jersey for the intermediate sprints classification was a Dutch thing. It is also remarkable that there are few riders that wore this red jersey in more than one year. This corresponds to the notion that the intermediate sprints classification was not really seen as something important, and that a rider only focussed on it if he was ranked high after a few stages. In my opinion, this was a valid reason to cancel this classification, even though I would have liked it to still be used.

Combination jersey

The combination jersey did not really have a clear owner. In most cases riders did not target it specifically: a rider tried to go for the general classification or stage victories, and automatically this made them rank high in the combination classification. It is also fair that this classification was removed, even though it was cool.
