Europe Sans Frontières
In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force, a milestone for the EU. Borders were opened, with the slogan "Europe without borders," or in French "Europe Sans Frontières" (ESF).
To celebrate this, a sprint was held at every border crossing in the 1992 Tour. The winner of the sprint received four points, the second two points, and the third one point. These points were added up for the ESF ranking.
The 1992 Tour went from Spain to France to Belgium to the Netherlands to Germany to Luxembourg to France to Switzerland, and back to France. So, eight border crossings, but because the transition from Germany to Luxembourg was a car trip, there were seven sprints. Below is an overview of the sprints and riders who received points.
