Number check
Sometimes, jersey numbers are skipped in my database. This can have a very good reason: that they were skipped in reality. It can also be an indication that my database is missing a rider (that never started). Below is an overview of skipped numbers, excluding the ones where I am 100% sure that these numbers were skipped in reality.
Tour de France
The following known exceptions are true for the Tour:
- In 1903, some riders only rode for one stage, and numbers for them restarted at 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140.
- From 1909 to 1937, different categories (isolated riders, B-class, touriste-routiers), had numbers starting at 101 or 201.
- In 1928, touriste-routiers riding in regional teams restarted at 151.
- In 1935, numbers for individuals restarted at 51.
- In 1951, Switzerland had a small team (8 in stead of 12), so numbers 9 to 12 were skipped.
- In 1954, the Italian team was designated number 31 to 40, but they did not participate.
- In 1961, regional teams restarted at 101.
- In 2007, because the ongoing situation with Landis was not clarified yet, the first number was 11.
- From 1958 to 1960 and from 1987 till now, because teams did not have 10 riders, the numbering was adjusted to keep it easy.
This leaves the following exceptions in my database:
- Tour of 1909: missing 255
- Tour of 1929: missing 202, 236
- Tour of 1930: missing 161, 162, 163, 164, 165, 175
- Tour of 2023: missing 13, 61
Giro d'Italia
The following known exceptions are true for the Giro:
- From 1931 to 1936, individual riders restarted at 61 or 71.
- From 1937 to 1939 and in 1946, groups restarted at 31, 71, 61 resp. 51
- In 1975, numbering started at 11.
- In 2011, number 150 was used to honor the 150th birthday of Italy, replacing number 158.
- From 2012 onwards, number 108 was not used to honor Wouter Weylandt
- From 1982 on, teams were smaller than 10 but numbers were skipped to keep it easy.
This leaves the following exceptions in my database:
Vuelta a España
The following known exceptions are true for the Vuelta:
- From 1989 onwards, teams did not have 10 riders anymore, but numbers were skipped to keep the numbering easy.
This leaves the following exceptions in my database:
- Giro of 1985: missing 124
Total: 11 skipped in the Tour, 5 in the Giro and 1 in the Vuelta.
